My Worst To Best Breastfeeding Experience
Personally, I really thought that it was easy to breastfeed as I’m used to watching a number of relatives and friends do it. I never heard them complain big time about it.
Sometimes, I heard them say that it was painful, but I really thought that it was just bearable. I thought they didn’t mean it. Maybe because I haven’t experienced it so I underestimated their words.
When it was my turn, I was shocked that breastfeeding could be very painful.
My first few months of breastfeeding were rough. My nipples cracked and were sore. In fact, there was a time when I couldn’t take it anymore. I cried in desperation and frustration.
Do you feel the same disappointment when you really want to breastfeed your baby, but you just can’t take the pain anymore? At one point my nipple was already bleeding and the pain of not being able to provide for my child was heart breaking.
Although a number of moms experience discomfort, it should go away before long. Breastfeeding is a natural thing between moms and babies, so, it should be easy. It should be bearable.
Unfortunately, there are cases like ours when nursing is very challenging at one point. So, if you are reading this because you can relate to the same pain then be assured that you are not alone.
However, you should also know that you don’t have to go through that ordeal all your life. There is a solution.
During my investigation, I received a number of product recommendations from my friends. I also researched about different nipple creams online and read the customer reviews.
I tried some of the products with great reviews and those recommended to me by my friends. I must say finding the best solution was not easy.
I wasted a couple of dollars over nipple creams and ointments that did not work for me. It doubled my frustrations.
But I was determined to find the best nipple cream because I wanted to nurse my baby again. Despite the pain I did not totally stop breastfeeding, I just combined it with formula milk.
I wanted to find a quick and effective solution and luckily after months of enduring the pain, I finally found a number of nipple creams that work for me.
These products brought intense relief and great joy to me because since I used them there were:
- No more cracked and sore nipples
- No more frustrations about not being able to breastfeed my child
- No more anxiety about getting cracked nipples again
- No more bitterness for not being able to nurse my baby
I will discuss nipple creams below and will give you the list of the different products that work well for me in the next section.
What is Nipple Cream
Nipple creams are wax, cream or ointment that moms can apply to their sored nipples to moisturize and heal. These products are made of non-toxic materials. So, they are safe for babies.
You can apply this on the nipple after you pat it dry. During application warm the ointment by rolling in between the fingers, this will make the process easier. Also, a little goes a long way. So, you can use the product for months or even years depending on the size too.
What Does Nipple Cream Do
Nipple creams are designed to heal and soothe painful nipples. They are usually made of organic and high-grade food ingredients, so they are safe to ingest.
All of the creams listed below contain Calendula extract which is popular for its healing abilities. It effectively mends cuts, scrapes, bruises and insect bites. Most especially it speeds up the healing process.
Aside from repairing your skin, it also gives immediate relief from pain. It is anti-inflammatory that significantly reduces your discomfort, which is what breastfeeding moms with sore nipples need.
Is Nipple Cream Safe for Baby
Nipple creams are likely to be ingested by our babies because we will apply it to our nipples where they latch. So, yes, as moms, applying any creams on our breast stirs a concern on our end.
However, there is really nothing to worry about, as these products are made from non-toxic materials. Most nipple creams are organic, so they are also safe to be ingested.
For instance, the list below only contains lanolin-free nipple creams. As moms, we want what’s best for our children. I don’t want to take risks when it comes to my kids. So when a certain product contains something off in the ingredients, I immediately scratched it off in my list.
I have some issues with lanolin, I will explain this below. Rest assured, all the products listed here are safe for moms and babies.
5 Best Nipple Cream 2017
I’m pretty sure that you reached this point because you are eager to find out the best products that could change your breastfeeding experience. I’ve tried all the products listed below and they worked great for me.
Actually, I used a lot of nipple creams before I found a few that really worked well. So, without any further ado, here are the nipple creams that made me feel like a Super Mom.
This cream is 100% natural herbal. All of its ingredients are organic and it is lanolin-free. So, this is safe for moms and babies.
For your peace of mind and confidence, Motherlove Nipple Cream is 100% Certified USDA Organic. Its bottle also included the leaping bunny which suggested that there is no animal testing and animal cruelty in the entire process.
All of its ingredients are safe for ingestion. So, you do not need to wash or wipe it off prior to nursing your baby.
This nipple cream is the first brand that convinced me that breastfeeding could be painless. It offers premium care for all nursing mothers. I love it more because of the ease and convenience of use. It’s a big help that I don’t have to clean up before nursing and after application.
Also, I am very impressed because after all the pains I went through for weeks, this worked like a charm. It relieved my nipples immediately and healed it completely after just three days.
It softened my skin and relieved me from pain. After a couple of days, I am completely healed and ready to nurse my baby without fears because I know that I have this cream that saves the day.
Also, it is very light compared to other salves. It is not sticky and is oil based. It feels natural and very soothing.
Also, I love its efficiency. A pea size is already very effective, so a tube of this cream can last for months. Its size is also very handy to slip into your bag or include in your diaper bag.
This product is also multi-functional. It is effective in alleviating chapped lips or cracked cuticles. A great browse moisturizer and under eye cream.
Actually, it works in dry or any cracked part in your body. I also heard from a friend that she used this with her child’s eczema and it worked.
Unfortunately, you might find this product pricey. It costs around $10 for an ounce.
But for me, this product is worth it. It has the consistency, the efficiency and the ingredients that give me peace of mind.
I also love that it is packed in a small bottle jar. I preferred this over plastic.
I highly recommend Motherlove Nipple Cream for all moms. For those who are expecting their little one soon, I suggest that you also buy a bottle now, you will be needing it. Trust me.

2. Dr. Jack Newman All Purpose Nipple Ointment
Dr. Jack Newman’s all-purpose nipple ointment (APNO) is one of the most popular and effective solutions to cracked nipples. Dr. Newman is a pediatrician who specialized in breastfeeding and he came up with this formula to help nursing moms feed their babies conveniently and with less pain if possible.
The ointment is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal so it effectively heals any damage in your nipple. Actually, this is the best nipple cream for moms who experienced severe nipple damage or Candida infection.
There was a time when I was suffering from nipple thrush and it was so painful. It was too much for Motherlove because after several applications it still didn’t work.
I still have my full confidence with Motherlove. At that point, I just felt that the pain was different. I checked with my doctor and she mentioned this to me. I tried and it worked!
The ingredients are as follows:
- Mupirocin ointment 2% – 15 grams
- Miconazole powder to a concentration of 2%
- Betamethasone ointment 0.1% 15 grams
Total: about 30 grams combined
So, what makes this effective? The answer: its active ingredients.
Mupirocin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria that forms in cracked and irritated nipples.
Betamethasone is an anti-inflammation that decreases the pain and soreness.
Miconazole is an antifungal that treats Candida albicans – a fungus that causes infections in the nipples of breastfeeding mothers.
Unfortunately, this is not convenient as you have to mix the ingredients. Also, it is not readily available in pharmacies. Aside from that, you need a prescription to purchase it.
When we have sore and cracked nipples we want comfort and a soothing solution. Good news! because that is exactly what Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter offers. This salve is another great option that moms should check out.
I am very excited to share this with you because this is as great as Motherlove Nipple Cream. Their prices are close, but this is cheaper.
Also, both are packed in a bottle jar and are multifunctional. That is why I have the same affinity for both products.
This Nipple Butter is clinically tested, so rest assured that it is safe. It is Calendula rich and lanolin-free.
This herbal breastfeeding nipple cream works wonders by moisturizing our nipples and drying our skin naturally using its buttery smooth plant based blend.
In addition to that, it is very convenient to use because you do not need to wash it off before nursing your baby. Also, don’t worry because this is non-irritating and dermatologically tested.
For usage, it is recommended that you apply this after each feeding.
Another factor that I really loved about Nipple Butter is its being multi-functional. Yes just like Motherlove, you can use this to alleviate different skin conditions aside from your sore nipples.
For instance, you can use this as your breast pump lube, as backup diaper cream, to cover and protect scrapes and abrasions, and to moisturize chapped lips, cuticles, chapped cheeks and minor rashes. One adventurous mom even used this to remove a chewing gum from her child’s hair and she was not disappointed. It worked!
Also, I love its consistency. It is not sticky and greasy. It feels great when you apply it on your breasts.
However, I just noticed that this product has the tendency to develop small balls. The microbeads are hardened substance due to temperature fluctuations and it can be painful to apply on cracked and sore nipples because it is hard. It also has a certain smell that I don’t like. This depends on the user though.
Thus, if this works for you, you can opt for the bigger bottle to save $4. That’s already a good treat.
Overall, I find this product effective and practical. It can last up to 36 months even without preservatives. So, if you don’t consume everything, you can probably use it for your next baby.
- Olea europaea (organic olive) oil
- Theobroma cacao (organic cocoa) seed butter
- Butyrospermum parkii (organic shea) butter
- Euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax
- Mangifera indica (mango) butter
- Calendula officinalis (organic calendula) flower extract
I come across this product because I love Bamboobies nursing pads. Since I was already at the point of loving nipple creams I tried different products in hope to find better ones.
My love for nipple creams didn’t stop from finding one that works well. Since most of them are multi-functional, I can keep them and use them for different purposes. So, I didn’t hesitate to try this one.
Boobease is non-toxic, certified organic and uses all-natural ingredients. It works great in protecting us from sore and cracked nipples.
So it’s best to keep one while pregnant because it keeps your nipples soft, supple and healthy. On my second pregnancy, I didn’t wait for my nipple to sore and cracked before I apply nipple creams.
Anyway, for moms who are already suffering from nipple thrush, this is a great solution. Boobease can effectively heal the cracks and relieve sore nipples in as early as 24 hours.
Since all of its ingredients are organic, you don’t have to wipe it off or wash your nipples after application or before nursing your babies. This is safe to ingest.
Compared to other brands, this nipple balm is not sticky. However, it has the tendency to be thick, greasy and messy. I love its smell though because it makes me feel relieved and comfortable.
Also, I liked their packaging. The color combination of black and pink is very appealing to me.
I also love their logo that features a woman with two hearts placed on her breasts along with their tag line that reads “Bamboobies nursing with heart.” As moms, we know that nursing is not easy and this brand recognizes it and offers comfort and reassurance.
Just like Motherlove and Earth Mama, this product is multifunctional. It heals scrapes, eczema, and any dry skin.
Unfortunately, what I don’t like about this is that it can be super greasy. It also leaves a stain on my clothes. It easily melts into a thick liquid when exposed to extreme heat.
I suggest that you use Bamboobies nursing pads to prevent stains in your clothes.
Although this works, I still find Motherlove and Earth Mama better in consistency and price. Boobease is more expensive compared to the two.
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Shea butter
- Marshmallow root
- Calendula flower
I am a fan of organic products, so when I fell in love with nipple creams I looked one from The Honest Company. I tried a number of their product and I loved all of them that’s why I decided to try theirs.
Honest Organic Nipple Balm is lanolin-free and made of high-quality and certified organic ingredients. It is also hypoallergenic, USDA organic and cruelty-free.
In addition to that, it is family friendly and environment-friendly. It has no petroleum, mineral oil, Vitamin E, gluten, parabens, phthalates, fragrances, flavors, dyes or other common allergens. There is nothing not to love about this nipple balm.
The Honest Company only uses high-grade materials in their products so this nipple cream is safe for ingestion. Just like the rest of the products in our list, you don’t have to wipe it off or wash it away before breastfeeding your baby.
Of all the products listed here, I love its consistency the most. This Organic Nipple Balm is not too runny or not too thick just in between.
Since it is not too runny, you don’t have to worry about spillage. Also, since it is not too thick, the application is easy. Let’s admit it, a very thick consistency is difficult to apply on our sore and cracked nipples.
Just like most of the products mentioned here is multi-functional. This nipple cream works great on chapped lips any cracked skin and more.
Also, I would like to mention that this is packed in a bottle and is available in 1.8 oz. However, the packaging is poor there is a tendency for leakage.
Also, although it contains more than most products in the list, it also costs more. Actually, this is the most expensive of all the items I mentioned.
In addition to that, there’s a minimal odor that smells like boiled peanuts. It doesn’t bother me, but this depends on every user.
Overall, this Nipple Balm is one of my favorites. It works well and you will really feel the difference over time. Due to its efficiency, you will not be needing it for long.

Why Not Lanolin?
Okay, I understand that some are wondering why I didn’t include Lansinoh HPA Lanolin in the list. So, I will explain that here.
Personally, I prefer all-natural and organic ingredients. I’ve learned that Lanolin is a by-product extracted from the sebum on sheep’s wool. However, most sheep are treated with pesticides and insecticides because they are susceptible to pests.
According to Chrystal Johnson, there is a study published in September 1992 that discovered that lanolin contains a number of pesticide residues. To make the matter worse, there are certain types of pesticides that can accumulate in our breast milk.
Also, Lanolin can cause allergic reactions and poisoning if too much is ingested. So, I can’t imagine rubbing the substance on my nipple while nursing my baby.
Some moms are allergic to wools too, so lanolin nipple creams would not be helpful to them.
Lanolin is not safe. Of course, we don’t want to take risks when it comes to our babies that’s why I didn’t include any product containing lanolin in my list.
All of these products offer comfort to moms and are safe for babies. They worked as designed, which is to moisturize and heal cracked and sore nipples.
These products are effective. I tried it myself, so I can guarantee you that they work. However, the results may vary in every individual. I hope that these products bring you healing and relief as it did to me.
